animal ～ヒトは動物か否か～

初の英英辞典は高校生のとき買った、LongmanのPB版。PB版なので語義も短くて単純だし、まぁかっこつけて買っただけなので、シールを貼ったりして自分のものっぽくしたけどそれきり放置。
大学でもLongman を買ったものの、たまにぺらぺらめくってわかった気になってただけで、全然使わなかった。

最近はもっぱら、ウェブ上の英英辞典。
当然ながら「日本語で知っている単語」をひいてみるのがお約束。
そんな遊びで面白かったものをチョイスして覚え書き。

たとえば"animal"＝動物だと思ってましたが

1 a creature that is not a bird, a fish, a reptile, an insect or a human: the animals and birds of South America a small furry animal Fish oils are less saturated than animal fats. domestic animals such as dogs and cats

鳥と魚はanimalじゃないなんて！reptileは「爬虫類」で、これもanimalじゃないし、虫も人間もanimalじゃないらしい。
日本語でも「動物」って言ったら人間は含まれない場合はあるけど、鳥と魚と爬虫類も仲間はずれなのかー。両生類はいいのか？


とは言え、第２の語義では

2 any living thing that is not a plant or a human: the animal kingdom This product has not been tested on animals.?pictures and vocabulary notes on pages R20, R21

植物と人間だけが除外された「生きとし生けるもの」がanimalになりました。
これが日本語の「動物」に近いかな。

そして第３語義。

3 any living creature, including humans: Humans are the only animals to have developed speech.?compare vegetable

ここで、人間もanimalに。でも、plantも含まれちゃったの？


4 a person who behaves in a cruel or unpleasant way, or who is very dirty: The person who did this is an animal, a brute.

これは形容としての「動物」・・・というより「獣」だ。と思ったら brute が「野獣」という意味らしい。Beauty and Beast の beast も「獣」だね。


5 a particular type of person, thing, organization, etc.: She’s not a political animal. The government which followed the election was a very different animal.?see also dumb animal, higher animals

第５語義はいまいちしっくりこないなー。
